Positive behaviour support
TMG has Behavioural Consultants that work from a Positive Behaviour Support Model (PBS). We work with Individuals, Families, Caregivers, Agencies, various residential settings, to provide supports around challenging and dysregulated behaviors.
Positive Behavior Support is a proactive approach to understanding and addressing challenging behaviors exhibited by individuals, particularly those with developmental disabilities or behavioral challenges.
Core Principles of PBS emphasizes understanding the function or purpose of behaviors. It focuses on modifying the environment, teaching new skills, and promoting positive behaviors rather than simply reacting to challenging behaviors.
Assessment begins with a comprehensive assessment to identify the underlying causes or functions of challenging behaviors. This includes gathering information from multiple sources, such as direct observations, interviews with caregivers and individuals, and analysis of environmental factors.
Based on the assessment, a personalized behavior support plan is developed. This plan takes a strength-based approach and includes proactive and preventative strategies for preventing challenging behaviors by providing information and education around diagnosis, modifying the environment (e.g., changes in routines, accommodations), teaching alternative skills (e.g., communication, coping strategies), and reinforcing positive behaviors.
PBS involves collaboration among various stakeholders, including the individual receiving support, family members, caregivers, educators, and other professionals. Teamwork is crucial to ensure consistency and effectiveness of the support strategies across different settings.
Implementation of PBS involves ongoing data collection and analysis to monitor progress and adjust the support plan as needed. Data helps in evaluating the effectiveness of interventions and making informed decisions about modifications.
Beyond addressing challenging behaviors, PBS aims to enhance overall quality of life for individuals by promoting their independence, autonomy, social connections, and participation in meaningful activities.
PBS is guided by ethical principles that prioritize the dignity, rights, and well-being of individuals. It emphasizes the use of least restrictive methods and focuses on promoting positive outcomes while respecting individual differences and preferences.
PBS is widely used in various settings, including schools, residential facilities, and community settings, to support individuals with diverse needs in achieving their goals and improving their overall quality of life.
